Vijay Ratnakar Gutte is a name that may be familiar to many news enthusiasts but not to hardcore Bollywood fans. This is primarily because Vijay Gutte was arrested in August of 2018 for an alleged tax fraud (more on this later).
The director is all set for the release of his debut movie, though a controversial one, titled “The Accidental Prime Minister” starring actor Anupam Kher as former PM of India, Dr Manmohan Singh. Intially, Anupam Kher was a little skeptical in saying ‘yes’ for the role as he was certain that his impersonation of the former PM would raise many eyebrows. Nevertheless, Gutte convinced him for the character, which according to Anupam Kher’s look in the posters and trailer looks quite convincing.
This film is reportedly based on the memoir of the same name penned by Dr Manmohan Singh’s media adviser from 2004-2008, Sanjaya Baru, in 2014.
Here are a few things that you should know about Vijay Ratnakar Gutte:
1) He is the son of sugar baron Ratnakar Gutte
Vijay’s father Ratnakar Gutte’s sugar firm was allegedly involved in a bank scam of INR 328 crore. The sources stated that Ratnakar’s firm had utilized the names of aroun d 2,300 farmers, a few of which were dead, to get loans worth 328 crore from a total of 6 financial institutions, which included 1 private-sector and 5 government-sector banks.
Furthermore, it was alleged that a portion of this sum was utilized to produce his son’s debut directorial, The Accidental Prime Minister.
Notably, Ratnakar Gutte contested the 2014 Assembly Polls as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for Maharashtra’s Gangakhed seat, although he failed to win.
2) Like Father, Like Son. Apparently
On August 2, 2018, Vijay Gutte was taken into custody by Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGSTI) in Mumbai for an alleged GST fraud of ‘at least’ INR 34 crore.
As a result, Vijay Gutte was booked under Section 132 (1)(c) of the CGST Act, which pertains to “wrongful availment” of input tax credit using bills & invoices that have been issued without any supply of goods or services.
However, he was later released on bail when he agreed to pay the said amount in ‘installments’ until February of 2019.
3) Has also produced 3 movies so far
Before putting on the hat of a director for TAPM, Vijay Gutte was a movie producer, usually putting money in small-budget films. The films that Gutte has produced include Emotional Attyachar (2010), Time Bara Vait (2015, Marathi) and Badmashiyaan (2015).
4) Took 8 months for finalizing the cast of The Accidental Prime Minister
You will be surprised to know that this Anupam Kher – Akshaye Khanna starrer has 163 characters, and thus in order to select the actors for the same Vijay Gutte, along with his casting director, took as many as 8 months.
