Suman Kumari: Know 4 things about Pakistan’s first woman judge

Meet Pakistan's first ever women Hindu Judge Suman Kumari
January 30, 2019

There are just 2% Hindus in Pakistan, and among them is a lady who has created history by becoming the first-ever woman judge in the Muslim-majority nation.

Suman Kumari, however, isn’t the first Judge from the Hindu community. Before her, Justice Rana Bhagwandas served as the acting chief justice for short periods between 2005 and 2007.

Here are a few things that you should know about civil judge Suman Kumari:

1) Kumari did her LLB from Hyderabad and then completed her masters in law from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) University, Karachi.

2) She will serve in Qambar-Shahdadkot in Sindh province, which happens to be her hometown as well.

3) In a telephonic interview to a leading news agency, Suman Kumari said that her first and foremost priority is to provide advice and legal assistance to poor people in the backward areas of Sindh province. Her father, Dr Pawan Kumar Bodan, also wants her to give free assistance to the underprivileged, especially from the Hindu community.

4) She is a huge fan of singers Lata Mangeshkar and Atif Aslam

Notably, in 2018, another Hindu woman named Mahesh Kumar Malani made headlines when she became the first non-muslim lady to be elected on a general seat in the National Assembly. What’s more interesting is the fact that she was given a ticket by the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (in Sindh province).
