You know Shoojit Sircar as the director of Vicky Donor (2011), Piku (2015) and maybe October (2018) too. But how much do you know about him apart from this? Next to nothing, perhaps.
A skilled filmmaker from Kolkata, Shoojit likes to make the kind of cinema that common people would relate to, which is quite evident from his films like Piku. However, filmmaking was never the career he wanted to pursue. Even to this day, the director says that Football is his first love. Thus cementing the fact that how much Bengalis love the game.
Here are a few facts and things about Shoojit Sircar that all fans should know:
Shoojit is the Oldest member in the All Stars football team
The All Stars Football club – owned by charity organization Playing for Humanity – boasts of many popular Bollywood celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, etc, who play the game to raise funds for underprivileged children.
In this bunch of relatively younger lads, there is a filmmaker who does not care for injuries at his age and only follows his passion for the sport! He is none other than Shoojit Sircar.
Considers Satyajit Ray his inspiration
In an interview, Shoojit confessed his admiration for the works of Satyajit Ray, and regrets the fact that he couldn’t meet him. The present-day filmmaker has time and again reiterated that the latter’s works were like Bible for him. Additionally, he draws come motivation from directors Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese.
His mother was in coma for around 3 months
Can there be anything worse than seeing a family member in a state of coma? It was in the year 2004 that Shoojit’s mother had a stroke, which resulted in her being hospitalized for 3 and a half months, at a time when the filmmaker had just finished shooting for his debut film Yahaan (2005). Unfortunately, all medicines and treatment failed, and his mother passed away.
Direction happened by chance..
While in his 3rd year of college, Shoojit picked up a job in the accounts department of the Le Meridien hotel in Delhi. After working for around eighteen months, he called it quits and joined a theatre group. However, since doing shows did not fetch him enough money, he simultaneously began to do other jobs as well, like being a production assistant.
Then he forayed into ad filmmaking and spent nearly two decades in the industry, making TV commericals for well-known brands like Cadbury and Dettol, before finally moving on to commercial filmmaking, on the suggestion of his beloved wife!
His movie Shoebite never released
Amitabh Bachchan and Shoojit had collaborated for the first time in the year 2005 — decades before Piku — for a film, titled ‘Shoebite’, starring the Shehenshah of Bollywood as the protagonist, John Pereira, who sets out on a journey of self-discovery at the age of 60.
The movie, however, was caught in a rift between two production companies and never saw the light of day. Shoojit, though, has ‘moved on’ now as he feels that the film might never get a release date.
Went to Russia to attend the FIFA World Cup 2018
Despite a tight shooting schedule, his love for soccer got the best of him, as he travelled all the way to Russia to witness FIFA World Cup 2018 live! Shoojit is, apparently, a huge fan of the Germany football team and was, of course, wishing for them to win! But, hard luck!
