If you’re a fan of Marvel’s Deadpool and his fast-talking quips and questionable crime fighting ways, then please spare a thought for DC Comic’s Plastic Man, who has been a largely forgotten figure in this superhero-rich movie landscape that exists today. With Thor, Aquaman and even Ant-Man taking centre stage in recent years, it would be easy for this particular plastic do-er of good to think he’s been left out.
Created way back in the 1940s by Quality Comics, Plastic Man (a.k.a Edward ‘Eel’ O’Brian) was the first of a kind – a superhero with a wicked sense of humour and a penchant for a pun. With the recent announcement that Plastic Man is to get his very own movie, we thought we’d give you the lowdown on this soon-to-be film star!
So, let’s get started.
Plastic Man’s Early Life
Edward ‘Eel’ O’Brian had a pretty standard childhood, that was until his parents died and when he was 10. Falling through the gaps in the system, he was forced into a life on the streets and then subsequently into the shadowy world of crime. As an adult, he was still on the wrong side of the law, making a dishonest living as a specialist safecracker.
It was a life he would lead until a pivotal moment that would change his fate in ways that he could never have possibly imagined.
His Origin Story
It was during a midnight burglary at Crawford Chemical works that he was disturbed by the night watchman, catching him and his co-criminals in the act. As they tried to make their getaway, Eel was shot in the shoulder, causing him to fall into a drum of toxic chemicals and while he did get away, he soon passed out on the hills of a nearby mountain outside the city.
When he awoke, he was in a bed in a mountainside monastery, being cared for by a Monk, who had protected him from the police and nursed him back to health. This act of kindness made O’Brian rethink his life and leave crime behind him.
It was during his convalescence, he discovered that the chemicals he had been dunked in had caused a radical change to his body and given him superhero powers! He could now stretch and bend his body into impossible shapes, as if he was entirely made of rubber and whilst keeping his connections to the criminal underworld as Eel O’Brian, he decided to become the red and yellow costume protector of justice!
Soon after he would acquire a sidekick in the form of small-time crook ‘Woozy Winks‘ who after saving a drowning wizard was rewarded with a spell that caused nature to protect his safety whenever danger was near. Woozy isn’t the sharpest tool in the box but is fiercely loyal to Plastic Man and his cause.
The Film’s Release
Warner Bros are the film studio responsible for providing a rebooting of this DC character and whilst there is no firm info on its release date or which star is going to play the stretchy hero lead, what’s certain is that it’s likely to be colourful and mirth packed and off the wall.
What you shouldn’t expect is a movie that takes itself too seriously, because neither does this superhero. If it comes close to being half as funny and watchable as Ryan Reynolds was in Deadpool, then we’re all in for a treat.
We can’t wait for this one to come out and as soon as we know more, so will you. Meanwhile, tell us what do you think about this superhero? We are all ears in the comments section below.
