  • Liberia President and former footballer George Weah made a surprise return to international football on tuesday at the age of 51 in a friendly match against Nigeria. The purpose of the match was to ‘retire’ the number 14 shirt worn by Weah, who was voted world, European and African footballer of the year in 1995.
  • French Power firm ENGIE and infrastructure and power equity investor STOA have announced a partnership to build a wind energy platform in India with a goal of setting up over 2 GW capacity over the period of next five years.
  • Assam CM, Sarbananda Sonowal, yesterday inaugurated the Indo-Bhutan Border Centre at Darranga in Assam’s Baksa district to strengthen bilateral trade with the neighbouring country.
  • In a first, Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das has announced that his government has introduced electric vehicles for official use. A total of 50 cars would be operational within the next two weeks.
  • Satellite township New Town has been awarded the Gold Certification for its ‘Master Plan and Design’, under the Green Cities Rating of CIIs Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Notably, Kolkata’s ‘New Town’ is India’s first green-rated satellite city.
  • The Union cabinet has approved an MoU between India and South Africa on cooperation “for exploration and uses of the outer space for peaceful purposes”. The MoU is one of the three pacts signed between India and South Africa in Johannesburg on 26 July during the 10th BRICS Summit.
  • National Health Mission Director Manoj Jhalani has been bestowed with the prestigious UN Interagency Task Force Award for his outstanding contribution towards the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. The award will be formally presented to him at the third high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the prevention and control of NCDs in New York on 27 September 2018.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Egypt for cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors. As per the MoU, a Joint Working Group (JWG) will be formed to improve cooperation on matters of mutual interest, including consultations on bilateral issues.
  • D Shivakumar, the former head of PepsiCo India, has been appointed as the chairman of advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) for a period of 3 years.
  • An interfaith meet was held In New Delhi to mark the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech at the Parliament of World’s Religions held in Chicago in 1893. Notably, former President Pranab Mukherjee was the chief guest at the event.

  • Chile passes law allowing teens as young as 14 to legally change their name and gender identity.
