Only a handful of people were familiar with the name ‘Amit Ravindernath Sharma’ before the release of Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Badhaai Ho. However, this is not the director’s debut film; Sharma helmed his first movie –starring Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha — three years before the inception of Badhaai Ho! Any guesses on its name? Yes, you got it right! It was ‘Tevar’.
Tevar, though, failed miserably at the box office and Amit Ravindernath Sharma could never come out of the closet. 3 years down the line and fate had something good in store for him in the form of Badhaai Ho, which despite having no ‘A-Lister’ in its cast, managed to enter the 100 crore club with ease.

1) Amit Ravindernath Sharma was an ad film maker before venturing into film direction
Having created advertisements for many reputed brands like Google and Lifebuoy, it’s no surprise that Sharma is a successful commercial filmmaker these days. While through the Google advertisement, Sharma touched hearts by presenting the reunion of two friends separated by Indo-Pak partition; with Lifebuoy TV commercial, Sharma subtly described the high infant mortality rate in the country because of lack of hygiene.
2) He is a Delhi boy!
Amit spent the majority of his childhood in Jangpura Extension and Lajpat Nagar, Delhi. Since he was well-acquainted with the habits and perceptions of ‘Delhi people’, he decided to keep Badhaai Ho as based on a middle-class family residing in the capital city.
3) Lost his mother in 2008
Amit Sharma’s life came to a sudden halt when learnt about the unfortunate news of the ‘premature’ death of his mother. His mother passed away in a car accident in the year 2008.
4) Got the plot idea for Badhaai Ho from his family itself
In an interview with a reputed daily, Sharma said that he got the idea for the plot of Badhaai Ho from his family history. “My great grandmother & grandmother were pregnant at the same time. And my two talented co-writers Akshat and Shantanu had seen the same happening in their family,” said Sharma with a smile on his face.
5) He took 2 years to finalize Badhaai Ho’s script
The 1st draft of the script was 185 pages long. Efforts were then made to shorten it down and the end result was 140 pages. Still doubtful that people may not like a long-duration movie, the third draft was brought down to 93 pages. This entire process was carried out over a period of 2 years!
6) His upcoming film is a biopic starring Ajay Devgn
From the family-field, Amit Ravindernath Sharma will now move to a football field, as his next project is a biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim, the soccer coach who is often regarded as the architect of modern Indian football. Under Rahim’s tutelage, India clinched gold medals at the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games and finished 4th in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956!
